Martial Arts & Firearms

Phillip R.Turner has been training in the martial arts for over fifty years. On May 17, 2018 he was promoted to 8th Degree Black Belt Grand Master in Tang Soo Do after having trained under Grand Master Darryl D. Khalid, the Founder (Do Ju Nim) of the Universal Tang Soo Do Alliance since 1979. Additionally, he is a direct student of the late Grand Master Bong Soo Han of the International Hap Ki Do Federation whom promoted him on February 28, 2004 to 3rd Degree Black Belt in Hap Ki Do. On February 18, 2017 Grand Master Tae Jung of the World Hap Ki Do Association promoted Phillip to the rank of 4th Dan Master in Hap Ki Do. Phillip has had the experience of training in other martial arts as well.

Phillip was awarded a Master of Arts in Education Degree from the University of Phoenix and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, San Bernardino. He was employed as a peace officer in Southern California for over twenty years and retired in June of 2019. Between 1996 and 1998 he was a contract instructor teaching defensive tactics/arrest control tactics for several different law enforcement agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Phillip is also a State of California P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training) Certified Police Academy Instructor. He is an expert in Use of Force and teaches various weapon systems including semi-auto pistol, revolver, AR-15/M4 Carbine, and shotgun. He is also certified in teaching less lethal weapon systems including TASER and expandable baton. Additionally, he is a certified Glock Armorer.

Phillip continues to teach firearms/ defensive tactics classes to Law Enforcement Agencies and law-abiding civilians. He is passionate about teaching practical self-defense and traditional martial arts. His background in martial arts spans more than five decades. In the last twenty-five plus years he has focused upon application of appropriate mindset as it relates to the context of the desired training outcome. During his career in law enforcement, he invested many thousands of hours training other peace officers in the disciplines of use of force, firearms, defensive tactics, and arrest control tactics at police academies as well as in service training.

In March of 2020, Phillip Turner was certified through the National Law Enforcement D.R.A.W. School as an Advanced Handgun Instructor as well as a D.R.A.W. Academy Firearms Training Level I Handgun Instructor. On May 15, 2020, he achieved certification from the California Department of Justice as a Firearms Instructor and is qualified to teach concealed firearms classes. In November of 2022, he was certified by the NRA as a Shotgun Instructor. With his many decades of firearms and martial arts training, he provides instruction to students whom are desirous of meaningful skills which will assist them in being prepared for life threatening conflict.

As of October, 2020, Phillip is teaching Tang Soo Do and Hap Ki Do at a private Christian School during the week. On some weekends, he conducts firearms training and tactics to civilian and law enforcement personnel.

Phillip is happily married and has two young adult children.
